Sometimes, explaining things like RSS just isn't easy, especially to someone who doesn't understand computers and the internet. That's when you use your resources (AKA search engines) to find stuff(AKA others' work) to do the explaining for you! :)If you haven't heard of Common Craft yet, you're seriously missing out. Their video, RSS In Plain English, became a huge success - and for a very good reason. It truly explains RSS in plain English, with cute sketches and everything. I showed this to a friend of mine some time last year, and she caught on right away. If you do check it out, watch some of their other videos as well.
I also came across this great (and bite-sized) blog post today that compared RSS to newspapers. Be sure to check it out.
